The Promising Youth

In honor of Shia LaBeouf's #1 weekend with Disturbia, I thought I'd post a topic on the most promising young actors working today. The young actor who, in your mind, is good enough to carry a film by themselves. An actor whose filmography you look at to see what they're involved with. And also actors that have proven they have considerable talent in a relatively short period of time. Who's got your attention?

As a way of limiting the choices, I picked "Under 30" as the cut-off point. There are a large number of early 30s talents (Rachel McAdams, Cillian Murphy, Reese Witherspoon, etc. etc.) but I'd say they're in the prime of their career.

These guys are still a little green...

Anyways, I think the most obvious choice to this exercise is Ryan Gosling. Immensely talented and takes projects largely out of the spotlight. But Gosling is drooled over by just about everyone in the industry and out of it as the next big thing when or if he wants to chase it and honestly, he hasn't been in all that many good movies. Maybe it's just as impressive that he stands out even in average films like Murder by Numbers and The Notebook but I'm still waiting on the first Gosling film I truly love. Still, the films that have most highlighted his acting chops so far have to be Half Nelson and The Believer... both very good, but both also would have been trivial indies without him.

My current favorite is Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He sold me completely in Mysterious Skin, when I would previously have written him off as the kid from "3rd Rock" and 10 Things I Hate About You.... Then he does Brick and solidifies his place. I loved that film and Levitt's ability to transition from the charismatic character in Skin to the understated one in Brick was all that much more impressive. I've yet to get to The Lookout but because of him, I'm eager to see it. And that's the marker for this list, if one of these people is leading a film and it draws you in, he's on.

There were a couple of actors that, frankly, I was surprised were still under 30 as well. Gael GarcĂa Bernal, Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhall specifically. All three have me intrigued. Jake's probably the lesser of the talents, but his film choices make up for it. Hell, he's already got Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain and Zodiac on his filmography. Plus, I'll give him Jarhead - which really was sort of a disappointment, but still shows his interest in different themes.

Ledger should have won the Oscar for Brokeback (sorry Philip Seymour). Other than that, my second favorite performance of his actually came in the largely ignored Lords of Dogtown while buried under a stoned surfer get-up. Up until Brokeback though, I think he was drowning in throwaway films (yes, another 10 Things graduate, as well as Casanova, The Brothers Grimm, Ned Kelly, The Patriot and A Knight's Tale). Since then though, his next two projects have really grabbed my attention... Todd Hayne's Bob Dylan rumination I'm Not There and taking over the role of The Joker from Jack in The Dark Knight. So Heath's an example of an actor I didn't give a damn about and have done a complete turnaround on, all before his 30th birthday.

Others that stand out for me include Topher Grace whose In Good Company and Ocean's cameos have me convinced he'll breakout with Spider-Man 3, as well as "The Trio" Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson (although she needs more Lost in Translation and a lot less The Island). I was even very impressed with Q' Orianka Kilcher's one leading role in The New World.

And a number of others that could move up in the future but I'm not sold on yet include Shia, Mandy Moore, Ben Foster, Bryce Dallas Howard, Dakota Fanning, Anne Hathaway, Evan Rachel Wood, Michael Pitt, Emile Hirsch, Catalina Sandino Moreno and Elisha Cuthbert... whose probably better to look at than she is at acting.

Ok so I think I will stop with my youngest pick, AnnaSophia Robb. She was the little girl in Bridge to Terabithia, and Violet Beauregarde in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. She hasn't done a massive amount yet, but I like her. Not only does she do a good job, but also she has a very different look. I have high hopes for her and I can't wait to see what's next.

James Franco is someone I personally love. Tristan + Isolde is one of my favorite movies, and Franco was great as Tristan. And who doesn't love Harry Osborn and the soon to be super bad guy in Spider Man?? Flyboy was a tad bit of a let down, but The Great Raid was fantastic.

Keira Knightly is one of my favorite actresses. Ever since I saw Pirates I have loved her and I got to say everything I have seen her in I have loved. A lot of people dislike Domino I think it's a very entertaining film. It's no Oscar winner (like Pride and Prejudice) but it did what a movie is supposed to do...entertain.

Anne Hathaway has come a long way since her Princess Diaries movies (which are great movies) Havoc I have yet to see, but I feel that is for the best. I don't want to ruin my image of her. She was made for her role in The Devil Wears Prada. As long as she chooses her roles wisely I feel she will be a big player in I years to come.

Brian I am going to disagree with you on one thing. Maybe it's because I'm a chick, but The Notebook is so not an average movie. It's one of those movies that will be a classic for years to come. Little girls will be crying while watching that movie in twenty years and wanting a guy like Noah. This movie is close to the ultimate chick flick.

Great topic for this week Mulligan.

Okay Carol, Domino is a bad movie. Sorry. Buy Keira Knightley is also a bad actress. I like her in small parts like Love Actually and Beckham, but as a lead she down right sucks i think. I hated Domino. I'm completly indifferent to Pirates, but I can say her and Bloom's romance is the worst part of the flicks. She was awful in the Jacket, as was the movie in general. Didn't see Pride and Prejudice which she nabbed an nom for, but what can she possibly bring to the table that any other English actress couldn't. Plus I don't find her all that attractive to boot.

I did like your choice for Anna Sophia Robb. While i didn't care for Charlie so much, I really like her in Terebithia. Damn movie makes me tear up just thinking about it.

And while I know a few of you (ie Mulligan) did not like Jersey Girl, I bet you liked Raquel Castro as lil Gertie. I thought she was really quite good in it. I don't know if she could do anything else, so I wouldn't base my movie-going experience on whether she was in it or not, but all the same I liked her and Ben's chemistry.

Also was really impressed with Ellen Page who was terrifying i9n Hard Candy. You actually sympathize for the child molester she is so cruel. X3 was good, but her role was a throwaway.

My faves will have to be the ones youve mentioned Mulliagn. Ryan Gosling I think deserved the Oscar and Fracture looks pretty good. Gael Garcia Bernal is always challenging himself and I love him for it. Never liked Heath Ledger til Brokeback. Look forward to Dark Knight. Anna Paquin doesn't seem to choose small flicks anymore it seems what with Xmen and all, but I loved her in Fly Away Home. And obviously she got an Oscar for Piano. And I did like Abigail Breslin in Sunshine, but she looks bad in that cancer movie that apparetnly was in theatres,

Try to think up some more.

PS Notebook really is a good movie. A chick flick, but still a good movie. Love Actually is still better though.

Ah sweet...young hot actors/actresses. Mmmm...tasty goodness.

Not a fan of the Franco. His forehead bothers me...and I don't think he's a good actor. And Keira Knightley...sucks. I'm sorry. I realize everyone's in love with her anorexic little body...but I don't like her.

On to people I love...Shia. I likes me some Shia. I hope he challenges himself more though. Seems to stick to fairly safe fare so far.

Ryan Gosling. God I love this man. His performance last year in Half Nelson was one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen. It's been said before...and I'll say it again. He is his generations Ed Norton. And considering that I worship that ground that Norton just comes close to walking on...thats about the best damn compliment I can give him.

I love Gordon-Levitt's recent work. Really won me over.

Michael Pitt. He was in Hedwig. And I love him. He may not have the best filmography...but I think he is always solid to say the least.

God...I hate myself for saying this...but Justin Timberlake. For those who didn't see Alpha Dog (which isn't a very good film), his performance and chemistry with the kidnapped kid is the only thing that holds it together. He is really damn powerful in it, and shows a lot of potential. While he wasn't seen much in Black Snake Moan, he was again powerful. I hate to say it...but I think he's a force to be reckoned with.

Christina Ricci...hot...and talented. Bad movie choices have often hidden her talents, but I think she can be fantastic. Look no further than the aforementioned Black Snake Moan. You want to talk about daring. Nicole Kidman puts on an ugly fake nose and gets an oscar nom. Ricci is a half-naked nympho for most of the movie. Bares herself physically and emotionally to the point that it is downright uncomfortable to watch. And nobody fucking sees it. America pisses me off.

Natalie Portman...to quote David Krumholtz in Harold and Kumar... "The things I would eat out of her ass! You have no idea!" And she's effin talented to boot. I'm not going to go through he entire filmography...I'll just say...Leon: The Professional. Enough said.

Scarlett Johansson...Ghost World and Lost in Translation. Thora Birch...haven't seen her much since Ghost World and American Beauty. She's incredibly talented though. Needs to work more often.

And...lastly for now at least...the not-quite 30 yet Maggie Gyllenhaal. The more talented of the two siblings in my opinion. Ever since I saw her in the very-bad Cecil B. Demented, her work has consistently knocked me on my ass. I haven't seen Sherrybaby yet...but have only heard amazing things about her. She is always daring in her choice of roles, and, along with fiance Peter Sarsgaard, has created the ultimate indie baby. Quite possibly the most talented and daring actress of her generation.

Brian Mulligan said...

Okay, I don't know how I did it, but pengin is entirely right (at least in one regard). I left off the more talented Gyllenhaal! Maggie! How could I forget her? Besides McAdams, she's probably my favorite actress at the moment. I haven't seen Sherrybaby either, but Maggie turns in a solid-to-great role in everything (Hmmm, well, everything that isn't Stranger Than Fiction, God that sucked).

And actually pengin was making a whole lot of sense...

1) Franco sucks. I'm sorry Carol. He's f'n terrible. I hate him in everything. The only thing of his I've seen and enjoyed is his supporting performances in the Spider-Man series and he's not exactly stretching as a spoiled white kid. Tristan and Isolde both blew. So did Annapolis and City by the Sea. Plus, The Great Raid seemed overblown and underwhelming at the same time. A total bore. Gotta disagree wholeheartedly there. He's a human vacuumn of emotion only matched by Karl Urban. Entirely worthless, I'd actually place him as the worst successful actor of his generation.

Ouch, after re-reading that, that came off really mean replying to your love of him. But honestly I find it amazing that two people can have such stark differences in opinion on one person. Why don't you let me know what you love about him, and maybe I'll come around?

2) Justin Timberlake. I gotta agree with pengin even without seeing Black Snake Moan. I've been impressed with him ever since Elton John's music video "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore." He was really, really impressive in that video. Then he goes and opens his mouth in Edison and spoils most of that goodwill with his whiny voice. But then in Alpha Dog I'm agreeing again, he was the most impressive part of that film (after having taken voice lessons). Timberlake still gets awfully rattled working with stars - his scenes with Kevin Spacey, Morgan Freeman and Bruce Willis have been terrible - but I feel like he's getting better. I'm eager to see Black Snake when I can. And I'm actually not ashamed to say I hope he succeeds. I was rooting for him since that music video (and I hate music videos on the whole).

Now to address both chachi and carol's suggestion that The Notebook is a good film... it's not. It's an okay film at best, but it boasts two incredible star-making performances. You can watch Gosling and McAdams fall in love and the audience fall in love with them at the same time. It's a rare opportunity, but don't mistake the movie for being anything besides the total chick flick that it is. Love Actually puts that movie to shame.

And I don't care what anyone says, Keira Knightley's performance in that film is so genuine and pure, I totally flipped for it. I've bent over backwards to forgive The Jacket, but she is good in Pride and Prejudice and Domino showed a rare willingness to try something totally off-kilter. Sure, her role in Pirates sucks, but Depp's the only redeeming factor of that series anyway.

Oh, and one last thing chachi, I didn't hate Jersey Girl... I just recognized it as what it was, a trivial piece of filmmaking. Kevin Smith needs to stop making excuses for it and move on. And Gertie wasn't especially endearing either... sorry. The only character I actually liked was Liv Tyler's oddball video clerk. Totally unique, unlike every other character in that film.

Brian Mulligan said...

Scratch that, I'll add George Carlin's father character to the list of worthwhile Jersey Girl characters...

Thank you for saying Timberlake! I almost didn't post it. I think he's doing a wonderful damn job.

Someone that I love that no one's gonna like is Jonathan Tucker. He just got Black Donnelly's and I'm happy for him but I've loved every role he's played. He has a creepy realism about him that makes you nervous just to watch him.

Ben Foster I've been behind since Flash Forward. I always said I wanted him to do movies but it never happened till recently, my favorite role probably being Mars from Hostage but he was wonderful in Alpha Dog. Like I said before, I love it when actors let themselves get beat up and drained for roles and Foster does it constantly.

I hate, I hate, I hate, I hate Peter Pan. And Ryan Gosling. I hate him as a person and as an actor. I love his movies though, I really do. I loved Stay and would probably do stay were it a girl and it had too many drinks in it. I loved United States of Leland. I just don't think he does anything for the parts or the movies themselves. He just has the skill to do with a part that no one else at his age can really do. Also girls love him so of course he's gonna get roles. I can name ten million better actors than him, most of which are far older and some of which are a lot younger. He's just a good medium, that's it.

Jewel Staite, she's this canadian actress that was the mechanic on Serenity. I hope she enjoys some mainstream success one day.

Gael Garcia Bernal is the f'ing man. I had only heard of him in Motorcycle Diaries, but had never seen it. My first and real taste was in Science of Sleep and now he's one of my favorite actors ever. He was amazing in The King, Amoros Perros, Babel, anything he touches. He does so well with so less. Great.

Shia LaBoeuf, thank goodness, is getting work.

To me most of the young actors are doing fine, the only ones I have distinct problems with are....all the ones that carol mentioned.

While Notebook may be a total chick flick, it doesn't mean it isn't a good one. It is much more than just great performances I think. I completely agree that Love Actually is much better, probably my fav of that genre, but I think Notebook has its merits. Do I think it will be considered a classic? Hell no, but than again Steel Magnolias is and I don't know why.

I don't hate Franco like you guys. But I do think he is a bad actor, but I think he has the potential to be good. He did win an award for the James Dean Tv movie I believe. So he must have it in him. I did like Tristan and Isolde to. Not great, but I was expecting to hate it and I didn't.

Hayden Christensen too. While he is bad as Anakin, he was great in Shattered Glass and Life as a House. He just needs the right director and Lucas was not it.

I must echo your guys' sentiments about Timberlake. He really did impress me in Alpha Dog and Black Snake. Still makes me want to gag just saying it, but it is true.

Ricci, god she is hot.
Portman, god she is hot.
Johannsen, god she is hot.
Bloom, go he is hot. (still don't like him either)

One whom hasn't broken out into films yet, but whom I love from Veronica Mars is Kristen Bell. First of all she is gorgous. Second of all, she has terrific sinec of comic timing. She can rattle of dialogue with the best of them. Third, she can act dammit. Anyone who has seen the show should agree with that. She was in Pulse, which sucked, but I like her in it. She has Fanboys coming out soon, and she dresses in Leia's gold bikini, so Im there.

The best child star under thirty has to go to "The fat kid", you guys know whom I talking about, the one from Sandlot, Big Green, and Son-in-Law. I refuse to type the name since he is officially known as "The fat kid" as pengin will attest to. I saw him in Dorm Daze and he lost a ton of weight. There has been no more joy in my life since.

Oh and Jake Lloyd. Defintately Jake Lloyd. Lot of promise there.

Oh Brian you hurt my feeling *tear* lol James Franco…eh maybe you don’t like him, but I love this guy. Maybe it’s because I love the fact that he did Tristan + Isolde. I love the old Celtic legend and I love the fact they made a movie of it (although it is missing a lot). But then you didn’t like this movie so that isn’t going to help sway you. The Great Raid is great and far from boring for me. Granted it is Joseph Finnes who obviously stands out, but that doesn’t mean Franco did his role poorly. I’m really upset I missed the James Dean movie.

Again I’m going to say again how much I want AnnaSophia Robb to do well. I’ll admit it Terbithia made me cry. I may even rent the Reaping just to see her…the movie itself doesn’t look very good.

Mr. Mighty Myth I am soooo glad you mention Jewel Staite. I completely forgot about her. I remember watching Flash Forward with her and Ben Foster (but I haven’t seen him in anything besides X-Men) when I was like 8 or so. Then she was on Firefly and just everyone on that show was incredible. I hope she does do some more movies….I may just do a little happy jig lol.

Since we are mentioning Firefly’s fantastic cast why not Summer Glau? She was River Tam in the show and movie. I only remember seeing her in an episode of Angel after the show, but hey Firefly is enough to love her. She is another one of those people I would love to see make something of herself.

As for the Notebook debate I have started I can’t really defend it against Love Actually because I haven’t seen it. But I bet money in 2024 select theaters around the country will play the Notebook for the 20th anniversary just like they are about to play Dirty Dancing (which I am soooo going to try and see lol)

chachiincharge said...

My brain just melted. I had no idea that Flash Forward featured Jewel Straite too. I definately remember Ben Foster, but I forgot she was the girl. Holy crap. I am overcome with nostalgia right now.

And carol, Dirty Dancing is not a good movie. So to say Notebook will receive the same admiration in 20 years is really kind of a insult to the Notebook in my opinion.

Nobody puts Baby in the Corner. You've got to be kidding me. When will I get my Road House extended cut for theatres. Thats what I want.

Pengin, you just surprised me very much. I agree with the choices of Gosling, Franco (I like him), and the Maggie G., but where's the love for Kieran Culkin? I think 'Igby Goes Down' is great, and I really enjoyed 'The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys'. I'd be excited to see what else he'll be doing. I think he has real star quality.

Also, Nathan Phillips. Yeah, that's right, the 'Snakes on a Plane' dude! He's in a fantastic Aussie flick called 'One Perfect Day' and kicked all sorts of ass in it.

I'd like to second the Thora Birch. She's amazing, and isn't in nearly enough.

And I know my next choice will probably insight a fight, but oh well. Rose Byrne. Yep, you read that right. She was terrible in Troy (but what and who wasn't?), and annoying in Wicker Park, based on her other roles in such films as 'The Rage In Placid Lake' and 'Two Hands', I do really think she can do something wonderful.

Chris Evans. Enough said.

And my list wouldn't be complete without mentioning the lovely Ms. Johansson. I love her in so many movies, too many to name. She's great.

chachiincharge said...

Great pick with Kieran. I love "igby" and I like "the mighty" too.

Two guys whom I loved in their small roles, but now will get to headline their own feature, are Michael Cera and Jonah Hill of "Superbad." They are the reason I want to see this flick as much as I do. The film may have been funny as is, but with them in it Im sold and it has jumped into my must see list for the summer. Screw Transformers I want Superbad. Anyways anyone who has seen Arrested Development knows just how brilliant Michael Cera is. While Im at it throw Alia Shawkat on the list. Don't know if she could have a career in film, but I still loved her as Maeby.

Jonah Hill is an entity unto himself. His small two minute scene in "40 year old virgin" is cemented in my brain for eternity. He was also the best part of "Accepted", which wasn't half bad. Also, while I didn't care for the movie, he was also great in Grandmas Boy and all he did for half the film was suck on a boob. Thats why you become an actor.

And the one whom will probably cement his status as a leading man this summer will be Seth Rogen. I loved Freaks & Geeks. I never saw Undeclared, but I imagine I would love it too. I hated the movie, but he still was terrific in "You Me and Dupree." And obviously he broke out in "40 yr old virgin." "Knocked up" looks like it will continue his trend upward. I excited for him and hope he and Apatow continue their relationship, but I want them to branch off and do other things too.

pengin said...

Filmguy...word to the Culkins...but hell....why stop at just Kieran? I'd add Rory and Macaulay to the list.

Macaulay...Party Monster at the very least ballsy...and his role in Saved was fantastic. I'd like to see him stick with it, cuz I think he could be in for something really spectacular someday.

Rory....I loved him in Mean Creek, and his small role in The Chumscrubber was damn good as well.

I'd like to echo Chachi's love of Jonah Hill (aka The New Fat Kid) and George Michael, I mean, Michael Cera. Superbad...will.be.awesome.

As for Seth Rogen. One short convo. "There's something wrong with her underwear." "Yeah. They're not in my mouth." He will rule this summer like Thor over the Vikings.

As for Chris Evans....come on. That's a lie and you know it. He's decent enough, but has awful choice in films.

I'd like to add Justin Long. He's always funny. Always likeable. And has a big summer coming with Live Free or Die Hard. Plus he's instantly recognizable thanks to those Mac ads. In terms of most likely to be a legit star, he's definitely in the front of the pack.
