With the opening of 3:10 to Yuma today, the movie season has arrived. It's time for the studios to start unveiling their boatload of Oscar contenders and me, I find myself overwhelmed with the options available to me. Starting this month through the end of the year there's nearly a can't miss film being released every week (and others opening limited that I don't know exactly when or where they'll show up to be seen).
But starting with September here, 3:10 to Yuma simply from the cast looks like a surefire good time. Maybe not a western of the caliber of Unforgiven, but few are. In addition, we get Shoot 'Em Up which for me is a DVD rental but with Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti it's a first rate DVD rental.
Even The Brothers Soloman and The Hunting Party look fairly interesting (because of Will Arnett and Richard Shepard's The Matador follow-up respectively). I even see a limited release of the long-gestating John Turturro film Romance & Cigarettes whose cast has intrigued me since I first heard about it nearly two years ago.
Then we get the one-two punch of Neil Jordan's The Brave One and David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises. Two absolute must sees on the same day. Three if you factor in Paul Haggis' limited release of In the Valley of Elah. Also being released are the intriguing, festival circuit King of California with Michael Douglas and the not-as-intriguing-but-not-appalling Mr. Woodcock.
A few more that haven't peaked my interest yet include Across the Universe (hey, the "Filmspotting" guys have it as a Top 10 inclusion, I might have to see it) and two I can't seem to find any reason to see Resident Evil: Extinction (sorry Rebecca) and Good Luck Chuck.
God, then there's more limited release must sees with Sean Penn's Into the Wild and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. It's just getting ridiculous at this point. But wait, still more. Peter Berg's The Kingdom is another one I'll definitely be checking out. And yet two more limited release must sees with Ang Lee's Lust, Caution and, of course...
Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited.
Good God man, I've got some movie watching to do.
(p.s. even the posters kick ass this time of year)

If you've been with Milla from the beginning, you've got to be with her at the end. By no means will "Resident Evil: Extinction" be stellar in any way compared with the rest of this Fall's incredible line up. Regardless, I have to have some good old fashioned kick ass zombie slashing action to finish out what I consider to be one of the best video game franchises (hell, can you name any others that have made it to trilogy status? Not even "Tomb Raider" with the help of Angelina Jolie!). Who's with me?!

Damn those pesky crickets. I thought I got rid of them with my comment....
Hahahaha, bravo. Very nice turn of the tide.
Besides, I think Tyler will offer you some support. Resident Evil seems like it would be a guilty pleasure of his too.
I still find nothing interesting about the series. Sorry Milla. Sorry Zombies. Sorry Rebecca.
Actually Mulligan you will be surprised and probably glad to hear that I hate the Resident Evil franchise.
I love the games. Hate the movies. I don't judge those that like it because if you are just looking for dumb fun than you found the right movie. But for me, they are just dumb. As pengin may recall, after he saw the second one, he was so happy with it simply for having a zombie hooker in it. Hopefully now he has turned the tide, but if not I can certainly see why people may have fun with it. For me, I don't.
And Rebecca, while it may have reached trilogy status, what does that mean anymore? We'll surely get an Underworld trilogy and god forbid Deuce Bigalow 3. There are sequels in the works for Pink Panther, Night at the Museum, National Treasure, Aliens vs Predator, an Ace Ventura prequel, etc. If they are profitable (ie. like the Resident Evil franchise) they will get another after that. As we see, in only four years time, we have had four SAW films. Its about money, not quality.
Plus Milla is an awful actress. All eye candy and no talent. She worked well for Fifth Element, but since than Ultraviolet, Joan of Arc, and Resident Evil. Don't like her. Never have.
I spent so much time dissing Resident Evil, I forgot to talk about the worthwhile movie coming up.
Saw 3:10 to Yuma and Shoot 'Em Up. I'll talk more later in our upcoming Recent Watches, but I think both are easily worth the price of admission. Mulligan, if you want absolute dumb fun (one that knows it unlike Resident Evil) see Shoot 'Em Up.
I want to see Brothers Solomon since I'm a huge Will Arnett and Bob Odenkirk whore. I saw Lets Go Prison which they made and that was awful yet somehow I still love them. Same goes for Mr. Woodcock. Beside the brilliant title (they manged to create a name out of two innuendos for male genitalia), I love Billy Bob getting to be a dick (pun intended). Also want to see Lust, Caution. It is NC-17 and we know what that means. BOOBIES!!!....oh and uh Ang Lee directed it too.
I was really interested in Romance & Cigarettes, but it has been delayed for so long that I don't have much hope. Still want to catch it though. Kinda interested in Across the Universe. As Filmspotting says, could be a masterpiece or a complete failure.
Certainly want to see Darjeeling, Valley of Elah (but didn't you hate Crash Mulligan), Kingdom (as much as I dislike Foxx, I love Bateman too much) and Brave One. Didn't know Neil Jordan directed it. Makes me want to see it more.
Don't care for Good Luck Chuck either. Dane Cook is already tired and annoying after only a few films.
But for me, the film that has me the most pumped is Eastern Promises. As you know, I'm a Cronenberg whore (Very difficult to juggle all my whoring and work). History of Violence was my favorite flick of '05. Viggo looks even better here. Anyone else absolutely love his two fingered jab to his throat at the end of the trailer? Plus Naomi Watts. Much like Superbad, it seems like Hollywood made a film completely catering to my every desire. I'm stoked.
Alright alright....I suppose defending Resident Evil wasn't the best way to start off with you all. Should have known better.
Anyway, I'm as excited about this fall's films as you all are! Probably the most anticipated for me is Darjeeling because I'm just a huge fan of Wes Anderson (and his cast members). The more I see of 3:10 to Yuma the more I want to see it. Shoot 'Em Up at first glance appears to be Smokin' Aces-esque but I'll just have to watch and find out. Eastern Promises and The Brave are must sees. I don't think I can bring myself to watch Good Luck Chuck or even Mr. Woodcook unless it's by happenstance (and free). The Bros. Solomon will also land in that category (as much as I love Will Arnett). I hope to see as many of these fall gems as I can, I know there's many more I didn't mention but you all know the list as well as I do and we all appear to be pretty much on the same page (give or take a few). Good luck trying to catch them all and I look forward to hearing your reactions!
Your absolutely right Ty, I was not much of a fan of Crash, but I think Tommy Lee Jones gives performances a subtlety that was grotesquely lacking from that film.
And it's not like I didn't recognize the talent Paul Haggis has behind the camera, I just felt like he used it to manipulate and underscore his writing in overbearing ways. Crash was all set up and no payoff, but that doesn't mean I can't expect more from his next film. And I'm by no means a Haggis hater... I like Casino Royale a lot and love Million Dollar Baby, I just feel like he was too aware of his message in Crash and that's how it came across.
So I'm still looking forward to Elah anyway.
Oh and I saw Let's Go to Prison as well and for as lame and pathetic as it was in parts, I still kinda enjoyed myself. I must just be a sucker for Arnett (although I still managed to hate RV and Blades of Glory so I'm completely negating that argument). Oh well, Prison was bad, but it was a bad I could enjoy... if that makes even the littlest bit of sense, I can live with that.
Oh, and Rebecca, yeah, we're all pretty snobbish around here (admittedly with myself probably being the biggest). Resident Evil goes over about as well as we'd welcome another Rush Hour film and a meet-and-greet with Brett Ratner himself. Still, considering your penchant for all things zombie-fied, I understand the appeal. Plus, there's that whole woman-in-peril thing... hahaha. I'm going out on a limb here and saying... you should absolutely love The Brave One.
Don't beat yourself up though, it looks like a film I'd love too, in spite of it's female-centric storyline. Haha.
Oh, and let's hope Shoot 'Em Up is nothing like Smokin' Aces because that film bleeeeeewwwwwww. I'm still disappointed in its crapiness.
I hear that a lot from people, that I'm a movie snob. While I certainly think I criticize movies more than others who simply want to escape, it is only because I know the potential they have. I criticized Spider-Man 3, not out of hate, but out of love, as cheesy as that sounds.
Besides how can I be a snob if some of my favorite films of all time include Tommy Boy, Spaceballs, Animal House, and Dumb and Dumber. Hell I recently purchased a movie entitled "Snakes on a Train" simply for the title. Plus the synopsis was fantastic. It is about a girl who has a Mayan curse put on her that causes her to vomit flesh eating vipers. She must make it to L.A. by train in order to find a cure. I mean come on, thats got Gold written all over it.
I don't feel so bad about defending Resident Evil now. Thanks chachi.
Hahahahahahahahaha.
That's all I have to say to that.
OK...too much to comment on. I really need to write something everyday to keep up with all of you.
Saw Shoot 'Em Up. Not at all like Smokin' Aces, because it didn't lick my taint. 81 minutes of balls to the wall action. It's fantastically awesome.
3:10 to Yuma...haven't seen yet. Gonna try to catch it Wednesday. I'm in love with Christian Bale, so my love of this one is in the bag.
The Brothers' Solomon...Will Arnett is amazing...but his choice in movies isn't. I'm excited to see it, but not holding out too much hope.
Romance and Cigarettes...I was so pissed when this kept getting pushed back...now the reviews are pointing out why. I'll wait for DVD, mostly because I'm not driving to New York for this one.
The Brave One...not a huge Jodie Foster fan. But, I'm looking forward to this. We'll see....I just hope its not Flightplan.
Mr. Woodcock...sick of the trailer already. Have no hope. This has been pushed back for like 4 years. Only excited for Ethan Suplee...the man was Willam Black. Word.
Good Luck Chuck...I'll see this. Because Alba wears panties with a pengin on her hoo-haa. That's it. I'll kick Dane Cook in the nuts if I ever see him.
Not going to talk about the limited releases...but just assume I'm interested in all of them.
Resident Evil...I had fun watching the 2nd film the first time I saw it...no fun the 2nd time...and this just looks boring. Milla is smokin' hot...but not talented.
The Kingdom...Bateman...BATEMAN!!!!
Across the Universe...I love the trailer...I love the idea...I love Eddie Izzard...and hopefully I'll love this film.
And finally......
Eastern Promises!!!!!
CRONENBERG!!!
I love David Cronenberg. I love Viggo Mortensen. There is no way this film will be anything but fucking amazing. My absolute must-see of the month, and maybe for the rest of the year.
As for the snob thing....yeah...I judge people by the movies they like. And I'll make fun of you for liking shit. But you're reading the rantings of the man who thinks Super Mario Brothers is the best video game turned film ever. So...yeah...there it is.
Again, I just have to laugh. Apparently I'm the only one who finds film snobbery to be a compliment.
