-When Rambo and co. obliterates the entire Myanmar armed forces from the back of a Humvee using only a mounted gun. It certainly tapped into my most primal side as I was giddy seeing a childhood hero kill all the bad guys. The whole theater was cheering.
-The hospital sequence in "Diary of the Dead." Creepy and riveting.
-The fantastic "Sweded" montage from "Be Kind Rewind." They did a better Rush Hour 2 than Brett Ratner. I loved!!! the 2001 sequence.
-Climax of "Horton hears a Who." Just o feat for the eyes seeing JoJos hideaway.
-The awesome car chase in "Doomsday." Obviously it was ripping on Road Warrior, but it was still a blast nonetheless.
-The opening to "Redbelt" had we totally on the edge of my seat. Too bad the rest of the film wasn't as good.
-Any race in Speed Racer had me spinning. Particularly the part in the desert.
-the quicksand sequence in "Indy 4." Also loved the motorcycle chase throughout the campus. And I did think the jungle chase was really great too except for those damn monkeys. Damn dirty apes.
-the creation of the suit in "Iron Man." Anything involving Downey riffing with a fire extinguisher was gold. Also loved the cameo at the end of the flick.
-the amazing prison break out sequence in Kung Fu Panda. Just jaw dropping choreography and visuals. The bridge fight was excellent too.
-NPH in "Harold and Kumar 2"
-The dinner sequence in 4 Months, 3 weeks, and 2 Days. She is eating with her boyfriends family, and all the while she can't get away back to her friend in the hotel who is currently undergoing a dangerous illegal abortion. Had me sweating bullets.
-the credits to 10,000 BC :)
-the rooftop sequence in "Cloverfield", as well as the friend that explodes. That was a damn cool silhouette.
-The first rape in "Teeth." She bit his penis off with her vagina. I could not leave that off this list.
And lastly, and probably best of all (including maybe my favorite flick of the year)...Forgetting Sarah Marshall. The muppet scene, anything with Russell Brand, Paul Rudds intro, Bill Haders webcam, the first time we hear "Dracula's Lament," Kristen Bell can't excite Jason Segal anymore, and of course, the wonderful experience that was seeing Jason's genitals for the first time. This film is chock full of great moments, and currently holds my best pic award thus far (excluding 4 Months, 3 weeks, and 2 Days, which was more of a 2007 flick, but was released in 2008)
I think there will bound to be a scene or two from "In Bruges" too. Seeing that later tonight though.
First, I hated that damn Rambo scene Ty, the lowest, goriest, most Neanderthal moment in the whole damn film. If you liked it for its audacious blood-spectacle, then, maybe. But I’ll still take Mel Gibson’s wrestling with his own inner blood-spattering demons (Passion of the Christ, Apocalypto) than I will Stallone’s any day.
And the only thing that made Cloverfield watchable (besides its paltry length) was its visuals. I won’t give any sequence credit - because it doesn’t deserve it - but its cinematography does.
Now, my favorite scenes from 2008, thus far…
The ones I agree with you on.
Indy IV’s motorcycle sequence. Although, I’ll extend it to include the warehouse scene from the opening all the way up until (and not including) the Nuclear explosion.
Iron Man’s making of and testing the suit sequences. Again, I extend it to include the “I AM Iron Man” speech at the end, and pretty much all Downey’s snarky dialogue. Love that guy.
The “Sweded” sequence from Be Kind, Rewind was what I singled out as my favorite part of the film, so I’ll stand with you on that one too. Almost all of Gondry’s films have flashes of brilliance (besides our “Screening Room” disagreement on Human Nature, which I still feel was a total bust of Charlie Kaufman’s ideas), although I still wonder whether he’s capable of Eternal Sunshine greatness without Kaufman.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall. The embarrassing reminiscing over how Peter used to spend his days during his relationship with Sarah Marshall. Paul Rudd’s cameo (get him a starring vehicle Apatow!). Peter’s admittance that “Fuck, why do you have to be so cool?” to Aldous Snow (Russell Brand). Jason Segel and Bill Hader’s “are you following them?” conversation. Lots of good scenes in this one, would be one of Apatow’s better productions but it has its share of bad ones as well.
The others that I can only imagine you haven’t seen yet.
Stop-Loss. Any scene with Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Cassandra’s Dream. The pop-gun and attempted murder scenes. Don’t want to spoil anything.
Paranoid Park. The bonfire at the end. Another one I don’t want to spoil the context of.
My Blueberry Nights. Love this film! Not flawless, but still my favorite of the year to date. I definitely don’t understand its mixed reaction. Okay, enough venting… the Blueberry Pie scene, the Keys scene and the Chips scene just to single out a few. And I’m sure I could come up with more.
And, finally, The Visitor. When Walter first plays in the park. His awkward moments with Zainab. When Tarek makes him show him what he’s learned from behind glass. And any moment that Haaz Sleiman is on screen. The best find of ’08 to date.
