Enchanted (Kevin Lima, 2007)

The perfect movie… if you’re a 10-year-old girl. And admittedly not a bad one even if you’re not. Enchanted does a pretty good send-up of the classic Disney cartoons by starting out in animation and transferring the story – and the gags – into live action (it gets a good deal of humor out of the situation too). Still it’d be nothing without the commitment of its actors, as both Amy Adams and James Marsden nail the doe-eyed, childlike nature of their characters. The sweetness of seeing Adams’ costumes made out of curtains and the dashingly heroic Marsden shrug off killing Dempsey’s character with a simple “Oh, okay” after finding out he’s a ‘friend’? Great stuff. Unfortunately the entire last act is a complete washout and Susan Surandon nearly spoils the whole thing. Forget New York City, I want to go back to Andalasia.
