Dear god this is a mess. Holy crap did they fug this up. Let me comment on what I have seen. I won't touch that which I don't know such as Damages and Mad Men, etc.

Let me first give credit where credit is due and say they got a few things right. Kudos to:
-anything for No Country
-anything for Eastern Promises, a nice surprise, but will be gone by Oscars
-John C Reilly for Walk Hard
-Jesse James' Casey Affleck and Gone Baby Gone costar Amy Ryan
-Ellen Page :)
-Extras and Ricky Gervais
-Best show on that isn't Lost, Battlestar or Office...Pushing Daisies and its wonderful leads

What they got wrong:
-Tudors and Californication are not good at all. In fact Californication is terrible. HBO must bribe the globes. Big Love is good though.
-Across the Universe...you got to be kidding...for what, best acid trip
-Michael Clayton was just ok. The acting I can get behind, but in terms of film it is just ok.
-Jodie Foster was irritating in Brave One
-American Gangster didn't deserve anything but an old lost award for the Godfather since the film doesn't have an original thought in it.

Oh and lets not forget the snubs:
-nothing for Lost, Battlestar, the Wire (on HBO dammit, what the hell!!), Superbad, Knocked Up, Bourne, Death Proof/Grindhouse, Zodiac, and Gone Baby Gone only got one for Amy Ryan.
-Josh Brolin was better than George Clooney
-where is Tommy Lee Jones? He had two fantastic performances. What gives?
-where's Jeff Daniels nom for Lookout
-NPH not recognized for How I met your Mother
-Michael Shannon and Ashley Judd in Bug. Come on, she kicked the crap out of Jodie Foster
-Talk to Me's Don Cheadle was better than George Clooney
-Rescue Dawn's Steve Zahn was certainly better than John Travolta
-How does Hairspray and Universe get comedy/musical nods and Ratatouille has to settle for the inevitable animated award. That movie is better than nearly every other film in here period.
-No Sam Jackson for Black Snake Moan...Blasphemy
-and finally, where is the love for Kevin Smith in Catch and Release or Southland Tales.

oh and I forgot to say that as great as the leads are in Pushing Daisies. The wonderful supporting performances from Chi McBride and Kristen Chenoweth are even more notable in my opinion.

Watch it if you aren't. You won't regret it.

Alright, now my own reactions to the Globes...

Glad to see Eastern Promises and No Country in the Best Drama category. Sight unseen I'm also glad for Atonement and There Will Be Blood. Michael Clayton and American Gangster are stretches and from what I've seen, I'm not too eager or impressed with The Great Debaters either.

Would have liked to see Assassination of Jesse James (haven't seen but looks fantastic), Into the Wild or Zodiac make it in instead.

I'm okay with noms for Charlie Wilson's War, Sweeney Todd and Juno on the comedy side (again, having seen none and going only on buzz). But Hairspray is awful and at least according to the Filmspotting guys, so is Across the Universe so those seem like horrendous stretches when you could have thrown in a Knocked Up, Ratatouille, Superbad, Walk Hard or even The Darjeeling Limited, The Hoax or Hot Fuzz.

Don't even get me started on the TV noms. Outside of "30 Rock," "Entourage" and "Extras" for comedy series... they got nothing right. Where is "Lost"? Where is "The Sopranos"? "Rescue Me" even? Hell, even "24" is better than that rancid "House" (now repeating the same episode for the hundredth time in a row) or (gag) "Grey's Anatomy" which won the popularity vote.

I'll stop back on later to discuss reactions to the acting nominees, but I have some issues with those too (and some pleasant surprises as well).

I think you would agree wholeheartedly with "Pushing Daisies" noms. It won me over within the first ten minutes.

If you don't know the plot, here it is in a nutshell.

Lee Pace plays "Ned," a pie shop owner who has the amazing ability to bring the dead back to life. However, the "dead" only has a minute to live before someone else nearby must take their place on the River Styx. The story revolves around Ned and his childhood love "Chuck" whom he brought back from the dead, played beautifully by Anna Friel, and "Emerson Cod," a slightly sleazy private investigator who uses Ned to bring the dead back to life in order to solve mysteries. he is played by the oh-so-underrated Chi McBride. The other, and perhaps best player in the show, is "Olive", played by Kristen Chenoweth, who pines for Ned as she assists him in the "Pie Hole."

It really truly is a one of a kind show. Very whimsical and absurd...dare I say like Wes Anderson. And one of the maestros behind this brilliant show is Barry Sonnenfeld. This is easily the best thing he has ever directed.

Alright, I realize I'm about a week late in getting back to this... but I have seen Angelina Jolie's A Mighty Heart performance in the meantime. So there's my justification.

Turning to the acting noms --

Love these without having seen them (yet)... opinions may/may not change:
Keira Knightley - "Atonement"
Daniel Day-Lewis - "There Will Be Blood"
Ellen Page - "Juno"
Ryan Gosling - "Lars And The Real Girl"
Philip Seymour Hoffman - "The Savages"
Johnny Depp - "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street"
Casey Affleck - "The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford"
Philip Seymour Hoffman - "Charlie Wilson’s War"

Love these that I have seen... opinions won't change:
Javier Bardem - "No Country For Old Men"
Amy Ryan - "Gone Baby Gone"
Cate Blanchett - "I’m Not There"
Viggo Mortensen - "Eastern Promises"
Julie Christie - "Away From Her"

Eh:
Nikki Blonsky - "Hairspray"
Jodie Foster - "The Brave One"
Cate Blanchett - "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" (haven't seen)
George Clooney - "Michael Clayton"
Denzel Washington - "American Gangster"
John C. Reilly - "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" (okay, it resulted in some funny ads... but really? A nomination? We'll see...)
John Travolta - "Hairspray"

And WHERE is the love for "Into the Wild?" Right now Emile Hirsch is my favorite performance of the year, Hal Holbrook and Brian Dieker (not even a 'real' actor) are two of my favorite supporting performances. They totally missed the boat on this one. Would have also liked to see Josh Brolin get a nom for "No Country" (probably my second favorite leading performance thus far).

Oh well. Some good, some bad. Hope when the Oscars whittle it down and knock off some of the excess (Anything to do with "Hairspray" being eliminated would be a good thing) it'll round out the field better.

Wait and see...

OK...I don't even feel like doing a full commentary on this, mostly because the Globes are a joke. They only exist so celebrities can get hammered and make an ass out of themselves. But, the lack of noms for Lost, BSG, The Wire, Zodiac (John Carroll Lynch for best super short, yet mega-awesome role...I'm campaigning...I'll get buttons and stickers made and everything), and the Apatow flicks/gang is rather disheartening.

Oh...and Chachi...good call on Jeff Daniels in Lookout, as well as mentioning Bug. I loves me some Bug.
