What is "In the mood for love"? Any movie with subtitles shouldn't be on the list! I nominate "Star Wars Episode I" to take its place. Best Star Wars of the bunch!

And what about "Troll 2" and "Rubin & Ed"? They don't make the cut?

I think that they shouldn't have anything from 2007 on the list. Just because a movie is great now, doesn't mean it will still be great in two years. Of course these lists are all subjective, so it doesn't really matter.

Thanks for making it a text list.

Titanic should not be on the list, its not a good movie, maybe much lower on the list, for the technical bravura of the sinking. never thought it was very good movie though. Get Moulin Rouge off the list completely!

L.A. Confidential should be much higher than #59. It's hard to be excited about Dirty Dancing. Schindlers List and Momento should be higher. Where is Being John Malkovich? I would dump Beverly Hills Cop off the list. i guess you need comedies but thats not that funny. Better with a Monty Python movie or A Fish Called Wanda, or what about Naked Gun or Airplane!?

I have major issues with this list, starting with there being no criteria given which explains what constitutes a “new classic.” The whole list feels like Entertainment Weekly is trying too hard to appeal to both the mainstream (Titanic at #3) and arthouse sect (Blue Velvet at #4).

Do they really consider Titanic to be the third best film of the past 25 years? Or even Hannah and Her Sisters to be Woody Allen’s best film from that time period? Where are Husbands and Wives and Crimes and Misdemeanors?

There also seems to be a large hesitation to include multiple works from the same director, regardless whether it fits the category or not. Plus, what about some of the more shocking omissions of largely beloved films… Forrest Gump and The Shawshank Redemption?

And where in the hell is Good Will Hunting?!

For now, I’m going to do this in waves. First up are the films I have not yet seen, so I have to reserve comment on…

Blue Velvet (1986), Crumb (1995), A Room with a View (1986), Wings of Desire (1988), The Piano (1993), All About My Mother (1999), Out of Africa (1985), Sid and Nancy (1986), Waiting for Guffman (1996), Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn (1987), Y Tu Mamá También (2002), Breaking the Waves (1996), Menace II Society (1993)

I realize there are some pretty big misses in there. But honestly, does A Room with a View belong that high?

Some major issues...

American Beauty Left off? thats a crime, i saw it again Sunday and its a great movie.
Moonstruck?a classic? not even.
Men in Black? very overrated.

^American Beauty is one of the most overrated films in the history of film. Just had to say it.

Where is Good Will Hunting? That would have been mine and millions of other peoples number 1. .....Learn two things number 1 don't do that......

Yeah this is an odd list, but as for criteria, they did say only films since 1983, but otherwise anything was fair game. They clearly wanted to please both the arthouse and the mainstream.

My biggest quibble is that not only did Moulin Rouge make this list, it made the top 10. What the hell is that about. Everyone knows Chicago is a better musical...but I wouldn't put that on here either.

Some films that should be higher...
-Goodfellas (should be top 5 easily)
-Schindler's List
-Terminator 2 (what the hell is it doing all the way down at 78)
-Back to Future
-Eternal Sunshine (top 10 easy)
-South Park (all the way down at 100, what gives)

Some ones that should be lower...
-Casino Royale (I love it too, but way top 20?)
-Wings of Desire
-Pretty Woman
-Rain Man
-The Piano

Ones that have no business being on here...
-Moulin Rouge
-A Room with a View (no Merchant Ivory flicks please)
-Guffman over A Mighty Wind...besides isn't that genre represented by Spinal Tap
-Napoleon Dynamite
-Michael Clayton

Ones that make me think EW is an awesome magazine...
-All About My Mother
-Naked Gun
-Lives of Others
-Evil Dead 2
-Children of Men
-Speed
-Die Hard in the top 10

Where the hell is...
-The Fly
-Chasing Amy or Dogma at least
-At least one Michael Moore doc should be here
-Anchorman
-Babe
-Big Trouble in Little China
-Sandlot
-Shaun of the Dead
-Heat
-Iron Giant
-Spirited Away
-Predator
-Pan's Labyrinth
-Once
-Leon aka The Professional
-and one movie the stars Swayze, be it Red Dawn, Road House, Point Break, Ghost or Donnie Darko. Not a one is on here. And Dirty Dancing doesn't count.

And films they inevitably will discover they left off and will subsequently tar and feather there Editor in Chief for not acknowledging in any respect.....
-Nightmare Before Christmas
-History of Violence
-Roger Rabbit
-Se7en
-Tae Guk Gi
-Brazil
-City of God
-Fucking Jurassic Park

For Shame EW, you just had to honor Sydney Pollack and put Out of Africa on there and not honor Jurassic Park, which is about as perfect a summer blockbuster can ever get. If Jurassic Park didn't make the list, what chances did Good Will Hunting have.

For the most part I was glad to see some of my favorite films, but I too feel like the mainstream hits might not be so classic in the future (i.e. Men in Black).

Anyway, I think that Children of Men should have been higher and I am shocked that Amelie didnt make the list.

THE PRINCESS BRIDE

and that's all I'll say.

Alright, diving into a little more detail on this thing finally. I disagree wholeheartedly with Ike about In the Mood for Love, which anyone who knows me knows I consider it a flat-out masterpiece. One of the best films of the past decade, or 25 years even, easy. Would be much, much higher on my own list, actually.

For Tanya, I can see it's a little early to be throwing in 2007 films, but at the same time you can't have the "last 25 years, except for 2007 list" because it gets confusing. So, I don't mind the films being on the list. And I find it interesting that There Will Be Blood gets a higher placement than the Best Picture-winning No County for Old Men anyway. I love 'em both, so I'm not critiquing the decision, just interesting.

Scottie K, I don't think Moulin Rouge or Titanic would make my list either. That said, Titanic is the biggest blockbuster of the past 25 years and if you count that, then it almost assuredly deserves a spot regardless of the quality of the film. A "New Classic" it definitely is... whether it deserves that distinction though is another thing.

Agree again, Schindler's List should be higher (why is this lower than Saving Private Ryan?). Maybe L.A. Confidential too. And Men in Black is fun, but hardly deserves a spot here.

Off My LIst
Moulin Rouge
Titanic
Casino Royale
The Incredibles
Pretty Woman
Dazed and Confused
Clueless
Gladiator
Men in Black
Fatal Attraction
Michael Clayton
Moonstruck
The 40-Year-Old Virgin
Napoleon Dynamite
Full Metal Jacket
Glory
Dirty Dancing
Shrek

Too High
Risky Business
The Lives of Others
Broadcast News
Toy Story
Hannah and Her Sisters
Witness
Edward Scissorhands

Too Low
In the Mood for Love
Unforgiven
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Ed Wood
Sideways
The Departed
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Memento

Just a Few Films I Would Have Definitely Wanted to See Make It
Good Will Hunting
The Shawshank Redemption
Finding Nemo
Se7en
Million Dollar Baby
Chungking Express
Minority Report
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
The Big Lebowski
Raising Arizona
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
The Royal Tenenbaums
Lethal Weapon

I'm sure there are countless others as well. This whole thing has me considering going back and fashioning my own Top 100 "New Classics" list. It might be upcoming...

You sir must be high if you would take Dazed and Confused off the list. I can stomach the rest of your choices, but not that one. As Filmspotting would say..."I hear what your saying, but you are totally wrong."

But6 good call on Big Lebowski. Totally slipped my mind. I prefer it to No Country.
