Eh...it was okay. Very reminiscent of the the first season in as much that we see them trying to "survive" on this island with little resources. Decent flash-forward that ties up what happens to Jack and Kate, but nothing revelatory. Seems weird they would do this ep. when they should be more crunched for time trying to squeeze in everything they needed to tell this season. What did Kate do for Sawyer? What is up with Christian Shepard? How does being a dentist qualify one to assist in a appendectomy, hmm Bernard? Perhaps weakest after The Other Woman and maybe Eggtown.

Maybe because it was reminiscent of the first season is the reason I enjoyed it overall. Well, more than last week’s episode anyway (although having re-watched it since, the ‘game’ idea didn’t bother me as much). I like when “Lost” takes its times to tell its stories as they did here. There was no rush, but unfortunately it was also lacking in drama… which is why it’s so weird they chose this story to let unfold in this manner.

The problem with “Something Nice Back Home” is that the episode (at least on the island) seems largely repetitive. Why Jack contracted the appendicitis will be immensely more interesting than watching him deal with it or watching another surgical procedure. We all know Jack isn’t going anywhere, so the whole island arc was shown to further Jack and Kate’s relationship and to continue to hint that Daniel, Charlotte and Juliet are trustworthy people, each at least having a small part in saving Jack’s life. Of course, this is all information we already knew or had been hinted at previously.

Off the island, the flash forward seemed to fill in gaps between last season’s finale and what we’ve come to learn about Jack in other character’s episodes. The big reveal being that Jack and Kate are together off the island and had planned to get married before Jack became the fatalistic, alcoholic pill-popper he turns into and that he may or may not know that he is Aaron’s uncle (I lean towards he does).

The reason I ultimately liked it, is because it was back to toying with fate and dealing with relationships (Jack-Kate, Jack-Juliet, Kate-Sawyer) by furthering them. But for a show like “Lost” which prides itself on its surprises, it was a very straightforward episode. We find out the ultimate fate of Karl and Danielle, that Miles can hear the whispers and that Charlotte speaks Korean, but nothing real game-changing.

I’m still waiting for the next “The Constant” or “Meet Kevin Johnson” to come along and blow me away. But luckily, with “Lost,” that possibility is there each and every week and if the title is any indication… “Cabin Fever” sounds awfully promising.
